Across weekly two-hour sessions, the course traces one continuous argument about how to live well — beginning with the gods and myths Homer and Hesiod inherited, through the Presocratics’ first attempts to explain the world without them, to Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, and on to the rival Hellenistic schools — the Cyrenaics, Epicureans, Cynics, Skeptics, and Stoics — who each answered the question differently. Sessions run as discussions and facilitated presentations. Supported by a printed workbook, participants are encouraged to apply weekly insights into daily life and share lessons learnt.

The course opens, fittingly, not with a doctrine but with a journey: Homer’s Odysseus, whose real education comes not from reaching home but from everything that happens on the way there. That’s the spirit of the ten weeks that follow — the point isn’t to arrive at a single correct answer to “what is a good life? It’s to spend time with people who are willing to explore possiblities, and to leave with a better-examined sense of their own answer.

Date: October 8, 2026 to December 10, 2026 (10 weeks)

Day: Thursday

Time: 10:30am – 12:30pm

Cost: Gold coin donation for each class to be paid up front upon your first class for the term

Bookings: please call 9922 4428 to sign up for this class

Everyone is welcome however priority is given to our LGA (Local Government Area) residents.

The Good Life is a ten-week community course in ancient Greek philosophy, now in its fifth year, taught at the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre.
