Please read the below important information and please be prepared for your appointment<\/strong><\/p>

  1. Most lawyers specialise in an area of law. Our Friday volunteer solicitor is a commercial lawyer, which means he knows more about companies and contracts. He has worked for a large law firm, an insurer and an insurance broker. He has never practised in criminal, family or personal injury law.<\/li>
  2. Please prepare your questions in advance and bring relevant documents with you. It will help if you can briefly write down the main facts.<\/li>
  3. Each appointment is for a maximum of twenty five minutes. Generally the first five to ten minutes will be for the volunteer solicitor to understand the problem, with the next ten to fifteen minutes on what you can do next legally.<\/li>
  4. The best the volunteer solicitor can likely do will be to give you initial guidance. It is doubtful you will get a complete answer. You may be referred to a consumer organisation, government department, not for profit or website. The volunteer solicitor may be able to help you write a short email to the relevant person.<\/li>
  5. Your local library may have legal resources. The State Library in Macquarie Street, Sydney has an extensive collection. You could try looking at www.legalanswers.sl.nsw.gov.au<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>
  6. You can also search find a lawyer at lawsociety.com.au<\/a><\/li>
  7. The volunteer solicitor can certify true copies of original documents which you bring with you. He is also a notary public if you need a document certified for a foreign country (if yes, please let him know in advance as he will need to bring his notarial stamp machine with him)<\/li><\/ol>

    David Cohen started his own law firm in 1983. He has a focus on Family and Criminal Law.<\/p>\n

    While studying law David worked in the Stamp Duties Office, the District Court and upon graduating, moved to the Premier\u2019s Legal Branch. He then worked for a number of private firms specialising in litigation involving family, criminal and commercial law cases including the Building Licensing Board.<\/p>\n
